DEMISE: Kevin McCarthy to Resign at Year’s End

Last Updated on December 6, 2023

Deposed 55th Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has announced that he will resign from Congress at the end of the year, putting a bow on his rapid fall from the third highest-ranking office in the nation while also sticking a shiv in the side of the GOP and the American citizens who voted for them, as he chips away at the GOP’s already dwindling House majority.

GOP Rep. and ex-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy announced on Wednesday in both a Wall Street Journal op-ed and a video post to X that he will be leaving Congress at the end of 2023, vacating his seat in the House of Representatives in a much less dramatic fashion than his seat as Speaker of the House was vacated.

McCarthy’s announcement comes despite his previous boast that he would not resign after being voted out as speaker.

“I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways,” McCarthy wrote in his op-ed announcement, adding that he knows that his “work is only getting started.”

“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office,” McCarthy went on to write.

McCarthy’s announcement comes just days after more than 100 House Republicans voted with Democrats to expel New York Rep. George Santos, and creates yet another vacancy in a district previously held by a Republican.

The announcement also comes roughly just two months after McCarthy became the first Speaker of the House in American history to fall to a Motion to Vacate, holding the position for less than a year (after barely winning it in the first place) before losing the Matt Gaetz-filed motion vote. That came after McCarthy reneged on virtually all the promises that got him elected speaker, including releasing J6 security footage, reining in the Biden Regime, and cutting government spending.
