And yet they keep also laying off people too: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/global-trends/us-news-tech-layoffs-2025-surge-in-us-amazon-microsoft-meta-slash-thousands-of-jobs-check-full-list-of-companies-affected/articleshow/123735499.cms
H1-B visas are only granted if the companies are unable to find workers for that field. But the US has robust STEM education, indeed it’s all anyone has talked about for the last 20 years – there are absolutely enough domestic CS graduates for tech companies to fill their ranks. So they’ll do things like, post the job only in an extremely local, preferably foreign language newspaper so it’s guaranteed none of the potential domestic applicants are even aware of it. Then after a couple weeks they can tell the government “we need H1-B, there’s no one here to do the job” which they know damned well is a lie, but they can pay the H1-B less and work them like dogs. Meanwhile all the people here who went to school for this are now finding their expensive degree worthless because Google or Apple or whomever can hire three Indians on visas for the same price.
A proposed solution: a federal website where such jobs must be posted first to qualify for H1-B. No posting, no visa. Now there’s a single, centralized location where recent graduates can look for jobs. No more fuckery. Of course, they will fight like hell to prevent this from ever happening.
Remember when Elon got into a big fight with someone over whether H1-Bs should be banned? He said there weren’t enough smart people in the US… yeah that was a fucking lie. It’s just a way for them to get cheap labor while screwing over US labor.
