A Florida lawmaker is pushing to eliminate homeowners associations in the state after calling them a ‘failed experiment’.

HOAs have been stirring up controversy in Florida, where residents are becoming frustrated with steep fees, strict rules and rigorous enforcement.

As tensions continue to rise, State Rep. Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami) is fighting to abolish HOAs entirely.

‘I am seriously considering legislation to repeal Homeowner Associations,’ Porras, 28, said in an X post on August 21.

‘In the Free State of Florida, we should not have authoritarian boards dictate your day-to-day life with no accountability,’ the District 119 lawmaker continued.

In February of this year, Porras filed a bill in the state Legislature (HB 983) to crack down on rules about HOA elections and financial reporting.

The bill died after reaching the Judiciary Committee in June, but Porras said he’s not finished yet.

‘I cannot, in good faith, continue to regulate something that I personally believe is a failed experiment,’ Porras told Florida’s Voice in August.
